Do You Take The Shot?

just curious about a tactic:

If you blow the stalk and the animal is say, running at 35-50 yards, is there a consideration of taking the running shot?

I had two very lightweight single shots made with tang safeties to mimic the overall feel of a light English shotgun. I just wonder if the scope is at 1x or 2x does anyone find it ethical or practical to take shots on running game at reasonably close paces?

This is in the context of fleeing plains game, not challenging or threatening...

I stumbled onto a free (at last check) program called Rasterbator which will generate a poster-sized printout from any image. The big image is made up of dots similar to the style of pictures you see in printed newspapers. The poster image is printed out on a series of...

Timing Your Shot In Africa

This question comes from the Shot Placement on Leopard thread but seems worthy of a whole discussion itself.

Personally, I grew up in the eastern US, where whitetail deer ARE the big animal to hunt. Whitetails are plentiful but very spooky, wily, at times almost ghostly critters. Most get shot on the opening day (something like 70%) because of the pure chaos but "hunting them" is very tricky. One thing you have to do is take the shot you get. Often that means very or no set-up time. You...

Doping The Wind - I'm Clueless, Are You?

I am not an expert, not a trained sniper. Wind is my nemesis when it comes to shooting as I am clueless on how to properly address it in longer range shots.

Apparently there are plenty who can join me in being clueless and some who are both clueless AND unethical. Noted in this thread.

I have not put in the effort to research wind drift properly and my answer is to just keep getting closer until the...

HUNTING Bushbuck

Hi,

I have been looking at the shot placement images which are great.

Does anyone have an image they can share of the bushbuck recommended shot placement?

I am pretty much 100% where I would place my shot.

Either just behind the shoulder?

Or possibly better to anchor the animal, a high shoulder shot?

Found this, thought it might be interesting. They have gone to the extent of freezing animals then scanning and cutting in half to show the actual size and placement of the vital organs. Very informative.

Shot Placement & Reducing Damage To The Meat

I have a question and I am sure there will be a million opinions for the answer, however it has been on my mind and would appreciate the feedback.
Having recently shot some Black Wildebeest for a client, I was told the shoulder shots I took damaged quite a bit of the meat.
Any suggestions on how to reduce the damage to the meat? I use 30.06 180 gr PMP rounds. I was thinking head shots but I believe that ensuring the animal is killed quickly and cleanly is more important than saving...

The Animal Moved

The animal moved just as my client fired his shot. The tracker and I agreed that the bull was hit. Shouldn’t be a big problem the buffalo were close, it was a clear shot. We immediately followed the dust and blood into the thick brush of the nearby korongo. It was the end of August and we had shot many buffalo. The Tanzania season had been in full swing for weeks now so this was nothing out of the ordinary. Last week we had a similar situation when a wounded buffalo that was left overnight...

Between the shoulder blade and the spine, usally makes them crumble on the spot. Saves on blood tracking.

HUNTING Bushpig

Love this section of the website. Have been pouring over placement on Bushpig and some others. Was wondering if anyone had or could whip up a diagram on some of the species not on here (or could give some insight, as I still don't have a copy of The Perfect Shot) and or give some advice or experience on this? -

Thanks as always!
